Cancer Treatment

Cancer treatment

After the revelation of the cancer diagnosis, patients and their families move on to the next phase in fighting the Big C; they seek the proper and best treatment available for themselves or for their affected loved ones. Treatment may vary from one patient to another, depending upon the type of cancer and its stage. Cancer treatment includes surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and biological therapy. When used to its full potential and as long as the cancer cells are detected early, these treatment may be the cancer cure that most patients long for. In treating cancer, however, it is important that cancer staging may be accurately determined so that the appropriate treatment may be used; treatment stages are directly related to the cancer stage of the patient.

Surgery

Doctors recommend surgery to cancer patients as an effective cancer treatment in removing the malignant tumor that the patient has in his or her body organs. In the case of lung cancer, or when the breasts and the kidneys are affected, doctors may also opt to remove the organ itself to prevent the cancer cells from further damaging other significant organs in the system.

In Radiation Therapy, high-energy rays are used to kill cancer cells. As such, it is only capable of extinguishing cancer cells in a particular area, where the large radiation machine directs the rays on the body. The patient must undergo the therapy at a hospital or clinic with for five (5) days and several weeks. This treatment is usually administered to patients who need to shrink tumors before its removal in surgery. If the patient cannot undergo surgery for a number of reasons, radiation therapy is the best method to reduce pain and to decrease the number of cancer cells in the body.

Chemotherapy

In patients with breast cancer, two combined treatments may be needed to ensure that the cancer cells are totally extinguished. Chemotherapy is the type of cancer treatment that makes use of drugs to kill cancer cells.

Biological Therapy, on the other hand, is the type of cancer treatment that uses the natural ability of the body, the immune system, to fight cancer. Also called immunotherapy, it entails administering substances that travel through the blood, strengthening affected cells all over the body.

Cancer patients have a better chance at surviving the disease and in living a much longer, fruitful life with the love and support of family, friends, and the community and with these choices of cancer treatment.
